Michele’s Thursday Dog Training Tip – Adapt!

Dog Training Tip – Animals Can Adapt If You Give Them A Chance

Animals can be taught to do anything that they are physically and mentally capable of doing. They are quite inspiring actually, in how resilient they can be and how capable they are of adapting. I wanted to give a shout out to all dogs or animals that have a physical impairment and share my own personal experience with my mother’s 3 legged dog, Sizzle. She came to us with an obsessive love for tennis balls and would chase them until you didn’t want to throw them anymore.

When her front leg had to be amputated due to cancer, she was down for a couple weeks healing, but then after that you’d never even know that she was missing that leg. She would run just as fast as the other dogs, was able to continue to chase that tennis ball and often times would surprise people when they finally noticed she was missing a leg. The only way that an animal will be held back is by the limitations that you set on them. Give them a chance and they can do anything they’re physically capable of doing. All you have to do is give them that chance!

Michele’s Thursday Training Tip: Desensitization

Dog Training Tip Desensitization

Dog Training Tip – Desensitization

Just like practicing for a veterinary exam or a grooming appointment, you can use desensitization as a way to get your pet used to a variety of items, situations, etc. Desensitization is the process of getting an animal used to a new stimulus through gradual exposure to it. In the picture above, you’d never be able to tell that Patch was scared of those zombie hands, but at first he was very afraid of them. By slowly getting him used to them, he’s now comfortable enough to lay in between them and let us capture a cute picture. Gradual progression is the key to making this work and how fast that progression happens all depends on the individual pet.

Michele’s Thursday Dog Training Tip – Commitment

Dog Training Tip Commitment

Dog Training Tip – Commitment

Making the decision to bring a pet into the family should be no different than the commitment you make to a child. You should be prepared to care for them for the course of their life; which means recognizing the financial responsibility, the time needed to properly care and exercise them, and the effort that is needed to train them.  Make sure to consider all of these things before bringing a pet home and remember that training takes time. Don’t rush into bringing a pet home before considering all of the responsibilities involved, but when you find that the time is right for you, nothing is more rewarding than the love from a pet.

Don’t overlook the adult dogs when visiting your local shelters, because despite that saying, old dogs CAN learn new tricks! An adult dog is just as likely to make a good fit for your family and they’re just as capable of learning new things as a younger dog. The next time you’re looking for a new furry family member, make sure to get to know some of those adult animals, because they just might be the perfect fit.
