No , it’s not too late! Fall foliage may have peaked in Northern Illinois, but that’s not keeping us from taking in the beauty. Inspired by the colors we see on dog walks and pet sits, here’s a list of 5 pet-friendly ways to enjoy Chicago’s fall foliage.

1. Take a Hike: Fox Bluff Conservation Area

Fox Bluff Conservation Area includes woodlands, wetlands, wet prairies, and 3,530 linear feet of shoreline along the Fox River. The topography is steep with varying slopes and ravines. The northern portion is open to the public for hiking and access to the Fox River.

Dogs are welcome on the hiking trails in the northern portion but must be on leash at all times.

2. Walk & Dine: Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park is as pet-friendly as it comes. From pet friendly parks and walking areas to pet-friendly restaurants, Lincoln Park has it all. Take in gorgeous fall colors and delicious fall flavors all in one place! At “Your Dog’s Favorite Bar,” River Shannon’s team loves to welcome friendly, leashed dogs. Plus, Sidewalk Dog Chicago has tips for shops that welcome Floofins here!

Remember, you need a permit and a registration tag for each dog to bring them into a Chicago Park District Dog Friendly Area (DFA), . Here is the list of Chicago parks that allow pets and the amenities at each.

3. Dog Admission Day: The Morton Arboretum

Several times a year, The Morton Arboretum hosts Dog Admission Days and Tails on the Trails events. The next Dog Admission Day is Sunday, November 3rd. On these days, dogs are allowed on the Arboretum’s trails from 9:00 a.m. to sunset on Dog Admission Days. If you’re a member of the Arboretum, you enjoy exclusive access to the grounds from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m.

Per their website, “Dog admission is $5 per dog and is available only on designated Dog Admission Days and for Tails on the Trails events. Each dog needs a ticket. General admission tickets are required for people, except for members. Plan ahead and save by purchasing online. General admission tickets purchased online are always $2 cheaper.”

4. Have a Picnic: LaBagh Woods

Located at the southern start of the popular North Branch Trail, LaBagh Woods is stunning! Known for exceptional birding opportunities, picnic groves, and large open fields, a visit is sure to make a dog’s day.

The foliage here is spectacular thanks to LaBagh’s diverse wooded landscapes, wetlands, savannas and sedge meadows. Having a picnic in this area is fun for humans and dogs of all ages. Please keep your dogs leashed and leave the alcoholic beverages at home. More of their rules can be found here.

5. Explore Local History: Jackson Park

Jackson Park is best known for being the site of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Here, the fenced dog park features agility equipment and toys for Floofins to enjoy.

While leashed dogs are welcome in most parts of Jackson Park, please keep an eye out for signs – some areas are off-limits to our canine friends. Always follow the rules to keep Jackson Park beautiful for generations to come.
