Our fabulous city, Chicago, is a bustling metropolis known for its vibrant culture and architectural marvels. Apart from all it offers, I love how Chicago boasts a thriving pet-owning community in which pet parents strive to do the right thing for their beloved Floofins. To ensure the safety and well-being of both pets and their human companions, the city has implemented specific regulations and requirements for pet ownership. In addition to last week’s recommendations about microchipping, we want to discuss pet licensing and registration in Chicago so you know you and your pet are all set in the city.
Dog License and Registration
In the City of Chicago, all dogs over the age of four months must be registered. Dog parents can also complete their license registration online and in person.
Because the State of Illinois requires rabies vaccination, all dogs must have proof of rabies inoculation in order to be registered in Chicago. Per Anti-Cruelty, “the cost of a license is $5 and can be obtained from the Chicago City Clerk. Taking the time to register your dog is incredibly important, as owners of unregistered dogs can be fined up to $500. The process is simple and can be done online City of Chicago Online Dog Registration.” Note that unsterilized dogs are accessed a higher registration fee.
Registration fees are subject to change and often contribute to funding local animal shelters and control agencies. These organizations provide vital services like rescuing lost pets, spaying and neutering, and educating the community about responsible pet ownership. Registering your pet in Chicago may help them be found when lost, is required for to access dog-friendly locations in the Chicago Park District, and is also often requested by boarding facilities and daycares.
Cat License and Registration
While not mandatory in the City of Chicago, cat registration is becoming increasingly common. Some neighborhoods or housing associations may require cats to be registered to help track stray or lost animals. In nearby jurisdictions such as Chicago Heights, for example, cat licensing is required.
The registration process for cats also includes providing proof of rabies vaccination. Per the link above, pet cats must also be vaccinated in the State of Illinois.
License/Registration Expiration
Please note that pet registrations expire. Each registration will expire on its expiration date, which is based on the date of purchase or when the pet’s current rabies vaccination expires, whichever comes first. Learn more here.

Beyond registration, Chicago has several other pet-related regulations in place. These include:
