To Sweater Or Not To Sweater?

The Low Down On Dog Sweaters From Your Professional Pet Sitters and Dog Walkers At Floofins & Company

As another Chicago winter sets in, it’s a good time to ask, does your dog need a coat or sweater when venturing outside in the cold? Oak Park, IL = cold. Oak Brook, IL = Cold. Ask our dog walkers, our service area = cold. While some people think coats or sweaters for dogs are silly-looking, it’s the utility of the garment that’s essential here, and for some breeds winter outerwear is a must. Dog Birthday Celebrations

Dog BirthdaysIdeas For Celebrating Your Furry Family

Believe it or not, Prissy and Portia will be turning the big 6 this coming July! Be it an official dog birthday or a “gotchaday” (i.e. the day your pet was adopted) it is celebration worthy and there are many ways to par-tay.

There is no shame in inviting family and friends over to celebrate your dog’s special day. A great dog birthday party could range from a small family party to full out event with human and canine guests.

Prissy and Portia, unfortunately, are not huge fans of large stressful parties or having lots of canine guests in their home, so in the past we have resorted to the small family party format. Over the years we have found a few more great ways to celebrate Prissy and Portia Day. Here are a few ideas to help you with your plans: [Read more…] about Dog Birthday Celebrations

Pet Identification Options

PetIDs

ID Tags, Microchips And Tattoos. What Is The Best Pet Identification For You and Your Pet?

A missing pet is one of the most anxiety-producing scenarios a pet-owner can experience. Various forms of ID can go a long way towards reuniting you with a lost dog or cat. Along with regular ID tags, microchips and the more controversial tattoos can save your dog or cat’s life if they get lost.

The most basic and often-used form of pet identification is the ID tag, which is affixed to your pet’s collar, and contains basic but vital information such as the pet’s name, your name and phone number, and occasionally a street address. Dogs and cats should be wearing collars with ID tags on them at all times; even indoor cats. Some, however, suggest removing collars when crating animals for safety purposes, especially if your tags are attached to training collars.

In addition to ID tags, microchips for pets are becoming increasingly popular and work in concert with plastic or metal external tags. Think of the microchip as more of a backup, since you need a microchip scanner to read one. It’s usually easier to read a collar ID tag, but if a tag falls off or is worn out, a microchip can be a godsend. Microchips are like tiny, permanent ID tags for your dogs and cats that last a lifetime and cannot be lost. In an area as large as the Chicago suburbs, and especially with towns like Oak Brook and Wheaton that sometimes disallow fences, microchips can be literal life savers if your dog or cat gets lost. Behind the Acronyms of Dog Vaccines

Behind the Acronyms of Dog Vaccines

DHPP, DHLPP, DA2PP-L, DA2PP-C… What Exactly Is In That Dog Vaccine And What Will It Do For My Pet?

It’s a new year, which means at some point we will receive e-mails or reminder cards in the mail from the vet to schedule our pets’ annual wellness exams and vaccinations. After looking at my own pets’ list of vaccinations, I wanted to know exactly what was being injected into my dogs and why. The most common vaccinations are: rabies, bordetella, distemper, hepatitis/adenovirus, parvovirus, and parainfluenza. Many of these vaccines are identified only by acronyms on paper which can make it difficult to understand, even for our own professional Dog Walkers and Pet Sitters.
