National Hedgehog Day Pops Up February 2nd

February 1, 2022 by Jennifer Houghton Leave a Comment

While most of us are familiar with February 2nd being the day we use a groundhog to determine whether spring or winter weather is ahead, there’s another holiday celebrated the same day. National Hedgehog Day!

According to MentalFloss.com, there are 17 different species of hedgehogs. But, none of them are native to America. Which might explain why we are celebrating groundhogs on the 2nd, here in the States, rather than hedgehogs!

It turns out that when German settlers arrived in America and couldn’t find any hedgehogs, they turned to a similar animal – the groundhog – to use as their winter weather predictor.

And while the popularity of these tiny creatures has blossomed, there are still some states where you cannot legally own them as pets. States like Arizona, Georgia, and Pennsylvania still categorize them as wild animals, making them illegal to possess as pets.

Let me give you a couple more interesting tidbits before closing.

Did you know that the hedgehog got its name from one of its favorite locations? Apparently, these little guys have a taste for insects that made them particularly popular in English garden. Their preference for spending time among the hedges coupled with the pig-like grunts they make earned them the name.

Hedgehogs can hibernate but not all of them do. Their poor eyesight is most effective in the dark which suits them since they are nocturnal by nature. And don’t expect to run into an “array” of them (that’s the name for a gathering of hedgehogs). They are solitary animals that don’t typically spend time with others of their species (unless it’s time for romance).

You can take a look at the entire list by going to the following website: https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/56004/16-fun-facts-about-hedgehogs

Making Every Month Dog Training Month

February 17, 2021 by Jennifer Houghton Leave a Comment

January may have just ended, but the opportunity to train your dog is good all year round.

The Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT), in 2010, established January as Train Your Dog Month. They picked January because of the large number of pets that were adopted over the winter and holiday months. You can read more about them by clicking here.

Many dogs wind up in shelters due to behavior problems. Concentrating on various methods of training that can be fun for both you and your companion, ADPT provides a variety of resources. Check out all of the options they suggest at https://apdt.com/category/safety-pet-owners/.

Training is something Floofins & Co. feels strongly about. We train our staff before sending them out to work with your floofins. We know lots of our clients share training habits they want our walkers to encourage while on walks, like sitting at intersections and loose leash walking skills.

In addition, many facilities are finding safe ways to continue to provide training classes and activities for your dog. That could include day care services, agility or obedience classes, or individual in-person or virtual training options.

Whatever options you decide to pursue, remember to stay consistent and make it fun. The end result will benefit you and your floofin for many years to come.

Winter Weather and Your Pet

January 13, 2021 by Jennifer Houghton Leave a Comment

Now that winter has arrived, adjusting to the season means different things to different pets.

If you have a pet that is older or has arthritis, colder weather may have an impact on their bodies. If your pet is due for their annual, or semiannual, wellness exam with their veterinarian, now is a good time to make sure that they get a thorough exam.

Tolerance to cold weather can vary from breed to breed and individual pet to pet. Observation can be one of your best tools. Taking note of their comfort level and how long they are able to tolerate the cold will go a long way towards being able to adjust how long they spend outdoors.

According to the American Veterinary Medication Association, factors that impact cold tolerance include coat, body fat stores, activity level, and health. [Read more…] about Winter Weather and Your Pet

Unchain A Dog Month

January 15, 2020 by Jennifer Houghton Leave a Comment

January is Unchain a Dog Month. Most of us have encountered dogs that are chained up outside. And it is particularly heartbreaking to see during the deepest freezes of winter and the hottest days of summer. And while some communities have ordinances against leaving pets outside in certain weather conditions, this doesn’t eliminate all situations where dogs are chained outside without shelter year round.

There are organizations that are making inroads to allow individuals to unchain their dogs. One of those is called Fences for Fido. [Read more…] about Unchain A Dog Month

To Sweater Or Not To Sweater?

The Low Down On Dog Sweaters From Your Professional Pet Sitters and Dog Walkers At Floofins & Company

As another Chicago winter sets in, it’s a good time to ask, does your dog need a coat or sweater when venturing outside in the cold? Oak Park, IL = cold. Oak Brook, IL = Cold. Ask our dog walkers, our service area = cold. While some people think coats or sweaters for dogs are silly-looking, it’s the utility of the garment that’s essential here, and for some breeds winter outerwear is a must.
