Landfill Biodegradable Poop Bags Because “Biodegradable” Isn’t Enough
Many of the poop bags that are marketed as “biodegradable,” are only biodegradable under certain conditions; namely, outside of landfill environments.
For a poop bag to biodegrade in a landfill environment, it has to do so without oxygen, moisture, or sunlight. It will likely be buried under mounds of trash with zero access to the elements.
Unsuspecting pet parents spend money on what they think is a higher quality, more environmentally sound choice only to use what might as well be the equivalent of a plastic grocery bag. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, “It takes 1,000 years for a plastic bag to degrade in a landfill. Unfortunately, the bags don’t break down completely but instead photo-degrade, becoming microplastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment.”
Landfill Biodegradable Poop Bags From Chicagoland
Faced with this conundrum, Jennifer Blaese, a Chicago resident and longtime dog mom took her passion for pets and the environment to the next level.
Jennifer initially set out to design a practical poop bag holder. She serendipitously stumbled upon the issue of existing poop bags falsely claiming to be biodegradable. Jennifer set out to design a poop bag that would biodegrade in a landfill, knowing that most used poop bags end up in that setting.
It wasn’t easy, but Jennifer and her team at GreenLine Pet Supply came up with an additive that utilizes the power of microbes and bacteria – both of which are plentiful in landfill environments – to consume the bag. The microbes then produce natural, organic matter that returns to the earth.
Best of all, the additive that Jennifer designed doesn’t affect the bag’s efficacy or use. The poop bags perform as well as any other poop bag on the market, if not better. Plus, they degrade over 74% in 1,014 days, a great alternative to the standard poop or grocery bag.
