Michele Hatley’s Tuesday Training Tip – Food Vs. Treats

Author: Michele Hatley

Don’t Add Treat Calories When Dogs Will Work For Food!

Meal time is a favorite part of many dogs’ days. Instead of feeding them in a bowl all the time, dump it into a pouch and use it for a training session!

A dog that hasn’t already eaten their meal from a bowl should happily work to earn it. Using their main diet will reduce the amount of treats you have to use and will allow you to use the extra good stuff when you really need it – like for challenging situations or new/difficult behaviors.

Don’t get caught in the trap of your dog only working for you when treats are present. Remember, many things can be used as reinforcers (not just food). Ideally, your dog should perform for many different rewards and that is what you should strive for.
