The holiday season brings joy, laughter, and cherished traditions, one of which has become the Elf on the Shelf. While this whimsical tradition can create magical and memorable moments for families, it’s essential to consider the safety of our floofins during the elves’ festive antics. While we don’t have elves at my house – I have warned my family against gifting us mischivious elves because I really don’t have time for their messes! – I know many families embrace the elf mayhem. But, it has to be done right to ensure our pets remain safe while the elves act out. Following are my top 6 tips for pet-safe Elf on The Shelf antics this holiday season!
1. Choose Safe Locations for Your Elf
When placing your Elf on the Shelf, be mindful of where you set him up. Avoid areas that are easily accessible to pets, especially because your elf resembles a chew toy. Many pets may be tempted to investigate or even chew on the elf, which can pose choking hazards or lead to intestinal blockages. Instead, consider placing your elf in higher locations or rooms that are off-limits to pets.
2. Avoid Hazardous Materials
As you plan your elf’s mischievous activities, be cautious about using materials that could be harmful to pets. For example, avoid tinsel, ribbons, and other decorations that pets might ingest. These items can cause serious health issues if swallowed. Cats are particularly known for ingesting these decorative items and getting very sick as a result. In addition, avoid any products that contain Xylitol, which can be fatal if ingested, especially by dogs.
3. Design Pet-Friendly Activities and Scenarios
While it’s fun to set up elaborate scenes with your elf, remember to keep them pet-friendly. For instance, instead of having your elf engage in activities involving food or potentially hazardous items, consider scenarios where the elf interacts with pet toys or books about pets. This way, you can include your pets in the fun without compromising their safety. Check out this pet wash idea, which I love! The Elf on the Shelf Pets collection is adorable but you can always use toys you already have.
4. Designate an Elf Room
To keep your pets safe from any potential mischief or hazards associated with the elf’s activities, consider designating a specific room for all elf-related antics. Explain to your children that this is where the “naughty” elves will make their messes and that it’s important to keep the door closed to protect their furry siblings from potential dangers.
5. Educate Your Children
Take advantage of this opportunity to teach your children about pet safety during the holidays. Explain why certain foods and materials are dangerous for pets and encourage them to help keep their pet siblings safe by being mindful of where they place their elves – if they dare touch them – and to clean up their messy antics quickly.
6. Have Fun Outdoors
Consider moving some of your elf’s antics outdoors! Set up a scene in the yard where the elf can enjoy winter activities like sledding down a hill (using safe props) or having a picnic with pet-friendly treats. This not only keeps the elf away from curious muzzles, but also encourages outdoor family fun.
