We’re almost a month into 2025, and pet wellness continues to evolve from a trend to a lifestyle. I’m happy to report that Chicago pet parents seem to be at the forefront of this movement – not that I’m surprised because I happen to know some of the best Chicago pet parents. Today, I want to explore the top five pet wellness trends for 2025 and how they’re impacting pet parents in the Windy City. If you have any favorite local pet products or services that fit into this blog, please comment below!
1. Holistic Wellness Takes Center Stage
Having been in business for almost 20 years, I’ve seen Chicago pet parents embrace a more holistic approach to their pets’ health, focusing on prevention and overall well-being. This trend includes:
- Natural nutrition: Growing interest in fresh food diets, freeze-dried commercial options, and homemade meals with clean, human-grade ingredients
- Alternative therapies: Acupuncture, chiropractic care, and hydrotherapy are gaining popularity
- Mental wellness: Enrichment activities like puzzle feeders, agility training, and even canine yoga classes are becoming essential
This commitment to holistic care is evident in the rise of specialized pet wellness facilities in the area.
Our veterinarian is Dr. Eliza Katz. She has cared for my super senior girls for a long time. Dr. Katz is a Holistic Veterinarian in Downers Grove. Her practice is called Holistic Veterinary Services, and they provide many of the above-referenced holistic modalities, including a variety of canine rehabilitation services.
2. Personalized Health Solutions Are in Demand
Personalization isn’t just for humans. While we’ve been tailoring our services to the needs of each individual pet we serve, Chicago pet parents are starting to seek additional personalized solutions for their floofins, including:
- DNA testing for pets to identify breed-specific health risks and nutritional needs
- Custom meal plans based on age, weight, breed, and activity levels
- Wearable health tech like smart collars and trackers
With Chicago boasting the highest density of dogs in the US (22 dogs for every 100 people), the demand for personalized pet care is not only rising, but it’s necessary to ensure our pets’ needs are met. Nobody wants their beloved pet treated as just another furball or statistic!
3. Pet Supplements Boom
The US pet supplement market has surpassed $2.7 billion. According to this article: A “survey from Packaged Facts said products for dogs dominate the market, making up 77% of sales, followed by cat supplements at 21%. The growing focus on pet health and wellness, particularly for issues like mobility, skin and coat health, and anxiety, is fueling this rise, said the report. Increased concerns about pet obesity and aging pets have also boosted demand for health supplements. Packaged Facts survey results show that mobility/hip & joint supplements are the most frequently purchased supplement type.”
As a Type A Dog Mom myself, I can tell you that I believe some supplements are lifesaving and encourage all my fellow pet lovers to consider herbals, minerals, and nutraceuticals for their pets’ wellness and longevity. While supplements cannot replace a balanced, quality diet, they can certainly enhance it. Always talk to your vet or find a holistic veterinary practice locally for recommendations.
4. Tech-Driven Pet Care Is On The Rise
In a tech-savvy city like ours, Chicago pet parents are embracing digital solutions for pet care:
- Online platforms for pet health monitoring and telemedicine services are gaining popularity
- GPS tracking devices are keeping fence jumpers close to home
- Robotic litter boxes are saving cat lovers time
- App-based GPS-enabled technology like the one we use at Floofins & Co. provides peace of mind for pet parents and their service providers, facilitating communication and transparency in real-time
5. Eco-Friendly Pet Care Takes Off
Chicago pet parents pride ourselves on being eco-friendly pet owners, reflecting a growing trend towards sustainable pet care practices. This includes:
- Eco-friendly pet products and packaging like the Greenline Pet Supply poop bags we use and issue to our team, which are made by a Chicago-based company and are the only truly landfill-biodegradable poop bags available on the market
- Sustainable pet food options that leverage local and regional sourcing, reduce waste, and have minimal packaging and shipping impacts
- Refocusing efforts away from consumerism and shifting focus to spending quality time with, enriching the lives of, and prioritizing our pets’ physical, emotional, and mental health
How The Top 5 Pet Wellness Trends for 2025 Impact Chicago Pet Care
These trends are significantly impacting Chicago’s pet care landscape:
- Increased Spending: Chicago pet parents are willing to invest heavily in their pets’ health and wellness; I see this with our clients who sign their pets up for dog walking and vacation pet care that allows them to remain at home because they see the value of leaving their pets where they are most comfortable and safe.
- Shift in Priorities: Pet wellness is now a top priority for Chicago pet owners, with many focusing on preventive care and holistic health approaches. Gone are the days when vet visits were an afterthought. Pets are slowly but surely claiming a deserved role in the family dynamic and budget, and with that, their longevity is improving.
- Growing Pet Care Industry: The demand for specialized pet care services, from holistic therapies to personalized nutrition plans, is driving growth in Chicago’s pet care industry. I see many holistic pet care providers growing their reach and practices because of the demand for more natural approaches to healing and prevention. At Floofins & Co., we too are seeing an influx of pet parents that are committed to ensuring their pets’ needs are met when they cannot be there for them.
- Education and Awareness: Chicago pet parents are becoming more knowledgeable about pet health, seeking out information on nutrition, supplements, and alternative therapies. I think we can thank social media for the new found access to resources and for allowing pet parents to ask questions and become more informed. In the past, pet parents may not have asked more questions during vet appointments because they weren’t informed enough to know where to start. Today, whether good or bad, information is always at our fingertips.
- Community Building: The focus on pet wellness is fostering a strong community of pet lovers in Chicago, with more pet-friendly events and spaces emerging across the city. I love to participate in local pet-friendly events and have seen a rise in these opportunities since I started the business in 2010. Check out two of our past events here and here.
