National Hedgehog Day Pops Up February 2nd

February 1, 2022 by Jennifer Houghton Leave a Comment

While most of us are familiar with February 2nd being the day we use a groundhog to determine whether spring or winter weather is ahead, there’s another holiday celebrated the same day. National Hedgehog Day!

According to MentalFloss.com, there are 17 different species of hedgehogs. But, none of them are native to America. Which might explain why we are celebrating groundhogs on the 2nd, here in the States, rather than hedgehogs!

It turns out that when German settlers arrived in America and couldn’t find any hedgehogs, they turned to a similar animal – the groundhog – to use as their winter weather predictor.

And while the popularity of these tiny creatures has blossomed, there are still some states where you cannot legally own them as pets. States like Arizona, Georgia, and Pennsylvania still categorize them as wild animals, making them illegal to possess as pets.

Let me give you a couple more interesting tidbits before closing.

Did you know that the hedgehog got its name from one of its favorite locations? Apparently, these little guys have a taste for insects that made them particularly popular in English garden. Their preference for spending time among the hedges coupled with the pig-like grunts they make earned them the name.

Hedgehogs can hibernate but not all of them do. Their poor eyesight is most effective in the dark which suits them since they are nocturnal by nature. And don’t expect to run into an “array” of them (that’s the name for a gathering of hedgehogs). They are solitary animals that don’t typically spend time with others of their species (unless it’s time for romance).

You can take a look at the entire list by going to the following website: https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/56004/16-fun-facts-about-hedgehogs

Happy New Year To Our Floofins Family

December 30, 2021 by Jennifer Houghton Leave a Comment

By the time this reaches you, Floofins & Co. will have completed our holiday season schedule.
We are grateful that we were able to care for your floofins during the holidays. It was busy and we implemented our first waitlist in the company’s history. Our team deserves a huge shout out for their dedication and commitment to making sure each floofin was tucked in and fed, medicated, and loved. Thank you to each and every one!

Current Status

We, like every industry, have been seeing increased demands for pet care service. And we are working diligently to bring on new staff to allow us to serve the clients on our wait list. We encourage you to take advantage of our staff referral program if you know of any great potential team members.
We feel gratitude for your support during 2021 and are hopeful, despite the latest variant, that 2022 will continue to see more ordinary experiences for all of us.

Looking Ahead

Plunging into 2022, we have new things coming your way. Be sure to follow us on all the social media sites for details as they are announced.
What does founder Kristin Skelton see on the horizon as she looks into the upcoming year? “I’m looking forward to introducing our dog training arm to help our pet parents work in their homes on pet behaviors they want to work on! Especially with all of the new dogs that have gotten adopted this holiday season,” she said. “Additionally, we will be unveiling our Floofin Couture clothing line for clients to purchase. It’s been a frequent request and we are excited to be able to get it off the ground. We are also excited to bring these items to our table at all of our summer events in 2022.”
We wish you a Happy New Year and look forward to spending time with your floofins soon.

We have partnered again with one of our Floofins Friends: Adreanne Tesene! Adreanne is the owner of Two Bostons, The Store For Happy Pets. She has graciously offered to provide our clients with a socially distanced rundown of all the best holiday gifts of 2021 for pets and people.

Update on Holiday Scheduling and the Floofins Waitlist

November 19, 2021 by Jennifer Houghton Leave a Comment

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I want to let our clients know about the status of holiday scheduling and our first ever Floofins & Co. waitlist.

EARLY BOOKING

While we have always stressed booking visits as early as possible, this holiday season presents additional challenges. We highly encourage our clients to book your holiday trips in the system as soon as possible. Why?

Our commitment to the highest level of service.

Like all industries, demand and staffing are in flux. Particularly at high volume times, like the holidays, we encourage early booking to meet pet care needs. We never overbook because that negatively impacts our clients.

We have seen a drastic increase in the volume of pet care requests. This likely results from many factors including increased travel from last year, new floofins additions to households, and the unfortunate decrease in pet care providers resulting from COVID’s hit to small businesses everywhere.

WAITLIST

We appreciate your referrals and encourage you to continue to suggest us as an option for your family and friends. As a caution, some new clients, depending on their service location, may be placed on our waitlist.

New clients may temporarily be waitlisted clients until we can provide Floofins & Co. caliber service. We encourage you to establish your pet with us so that we can quickly transition to providing service as soon as possible.

Floofins & CO. appreciates all of our clients, new and established. We promise to continue to give you the service you have come to expect. And for new clients, we will make your pet a member of our Floofins Family as soon as we can.

Thank you and enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday.

Fireworks and Frightened Floofins

June 30, 2021 by Jennifer Houghton Leave a Comment

As most of us prepare to return to a more familiar version of the 4th of July holiday, it is always good to emphasize the potential issues some pets may face from fireworks.

Even the most chill pets may be undone by the loud sounds of explosions. July 5th is one of the busiest days at animal shelters, according to American Humane Association.

The last thing pet parents want is to lose a pet during a fireworks display and risk injury, death, or separation from their home due to a panicked escape. Let’s cover some suggestions on how to approach the holiday with your pet in mind.

  • Indoor time is good. Keep your pet indoors during the display. And if you plan to head out to watch the fireworks outside your home, leave your pet at home. Some pet parents find that thunder shirts or similar products provide relief. But, not all pets will find relief that way.
  • Make sure your pet is properly ID’ed. Microchipping is great, but it never hurts to have additional ID tags on your pet just in case they slip out a door. If you have guests over make sure they are aware of your pet so they don’t inadvertently let them outside.
  • Barbecues are good for people, not pets. There are lots of opportunities for pets to get into products or foods that might cause them harm. Watch out for alcohol, table scraps that might upset tummies or cause more severe damage (we see you ribs and chicken wings), and any insect repellent product not specifically made for pets.

You can check out other ideas for safety from PetMD by clicking on the following link: https://www.petmd.com/dog/seasonal/evr_multi_top_ten_fourth_of_july_pet_safety_tips

Stay safe, have fun, and if possible, hang out with your floofin and make them as comfortable as possible.
