June Is Adopt A Cat Month

June 16, 2023 by Jennifer Houghton Leave a Comment

June isn’t just the month of summer. It also serves as Adopt a Cat Month.

One of the primary goals of the month is to home cats and kittens. Shelters continue to struggle with funding and and covering supplies.

Since June coincides with the height of kitten season, a time when the largest number of cats give birth to litters, there is often an influx of felines into the shelters. This year, American Humane will celebrate their 48th annual June focus on adoption. American Humane has “provided lifesaving animal first responder assistance at the sites of virtually every major national disaster response from Pearl Harbor to 9/11, and from Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Dorian to the novel coronavirus pandemic.”

For folks interested in donations, you can head over to the ASPCA Adopt A Cat webpage or you can donate to American Humane’s Feed The Hungry campaign which delivers food to shelters all over the country. Or, as we like to encourage, donate to your local shelter where you can have an immediate and close to home impact.

You don’t have to simply donate, ASPCA has a fundraising page where you can build up donations on your own or by creating a team.

If you opt to bring a new cat into your life this month, don’t forget to utilize the great resources that American Humane offers on their website. You can find reference materials on topics such as

  • Adoption Checklists
  • Cat to Cat Introductions
  • Dog to Cat Introductions
  • Cat Collars
  • Scratching
  • Litter box usage

And if you are in the Chicagoland area and considering adopting a cat, please visit your local rescues and shelters.

Lyme in the Time of COVID

May 13, 2020 by Jennifer Houghton Leave a Comment

I confess the title is a little bit cheesy and is an English major homage to a famous work of literature, but the topic of Lyme disease is a serious one if you have pets.

As we enter into warmer weather and remain restricted to social distancing protocols, many folks are finding it easier to separate themselves from other people by spending time walking in nature. And what walk is complete without your furry friend?

Backyard Chickens

July 17, 2019 by Jennifer Houghton Leave a Comment

Ever wake up one morning and think, “Forget this city life! I’m going to move to the middle of nowhere and live off the land!”

Well, you can get a little taste of that experience before making the full-fledged leap to the pioneer lifestyle by trying out some backyard chickens. What are backyard chickens? They are suburbanites raising chickens in their small yards as pets and for eggs.  [Read more…] about Backyard Chickens

Dognapping in Chicagoland – How to Protect Your Pet

Dognapping On The Rise, In Chicagoland

iStock_000017717328XSmallDognapping—or stealing a dog with the intent on returning it for ransom, or reselling it to unsuspecting buyers, has been escalating in the Chicagoland area in recent years.

According to the American Kennel Club, which has been keeping statistics on reported dognappings, rates of this crime are growing every year.

Dogs are often taken out of cars and simply scooped up when they’re tied outside a store or coffee shop. Unattended dogs in yards, often attached to the property only by a lead-line, are also easy pickings for thieves, who know how to move very quickly to snatch up a dog. Even dogs in fenced-in yards are not entirely safe if they are unattended, however the most common ways dogs are stolen is off the street or from cars.

Similar to this is something called pet flipping, where a criminal will take a dog, often posing as the owner in response to “lost dog” ads and then sell the pet for cash. Pure-bred dogs are preferred by criminals because they fetch higher prices, and also because they can be used in breeding.

Taking safety precautions can greatly reduce the likelihood that your dog will be snatched: [Read more…] about Dognapping in Chicagoland – How to Protect Your Pet
