Got Undercoat? Wondering If The FURminator Works?

Summer has officially begun! We have had many hot days already, and our furry Floofins are shedding. Shedding is the natural process of losing hair which allows for a new coat to fill in. Believe it or not, all dogs shed unless they are classified as a hairless breed. Of course, breeds vary in the amount of hair shed.

With three dogs that romp around the house I am always on the lookout for products that can help manage the mass amount of accumulating dog fur. After seeing FURminator products at many different pet stores, I decided to buy and test the ‘Medium Short Hair deShedding Tool’ which was the recommended size their website suggested after I entered information about my dogs’ weight, fur length, and fur type. FURminator advertises that their products can reduce shedding up to 90%. The specific FURminator that I purchased has a stainless steel deShedding edge that reaches deep beneath a dogs top coat to gently remove the undercoat and loose fur. There is a ‘FURejector’ button that cleans and removes loose fur from the tool.

The deShedding tool removes A LOT of fur. I have tried many traditional brushes and no other product removes the same amount of fur. Also the ‘FURejector’ button makes clean-up a breeze. Unlike traditional brushes where the fur flies everywhere as you brush, this tool keeps the fur stuck in the stainless steel edge until the button is pushed. Typically, after one pass the fur will need to be removed. It doesn’t take much effort to see results. I used this tool on my 30-pound terrier mix and after 20 minutes an entire grocery bag was full of fur.

Unfortunately, I was only able to use this tool on one of my dogs. The stainless steel edge was just too long to gently pull any fur off of my other two dogs. The edge is very sharp and I didn’t want to push too hard in fear of hurting them or making it a bad experience. It did take quite a bit of time to brush through my dog’s entire coat. Fortunately, she enjoys the process but it may not be the best option for those pups that get a little squirmy. The price for this particular tool is a little steep at $52.99. The prices for similar FURminator tools range from $37.99-$72.99.

Overall, I really like the product as it worked well at decreasing the shedding on one of my dogs. FURminator does offer many other ‘deShedding’ products and accessories such as shampoo and conditioner as well as products for cats and small and furry animals.
