National Dog Week: What Makes Dogs Happy?

At Floofins & Co., we spend our days surrounded by wagging tails, goofy grins, and the joyful companionship of dogs. And since it’s National Dog Week next week, we want to take a moment to answer a simple but meaningful question: what makes dogs happy?; like really happy. While every pup is unique, the foundations of canine happiness are universal. Dogs thrive on exercise, enrichment, training, play, and affection, but the secret lies in providing each in a way that respects their individuality and needs. Let’s jump in!

What Doesn’t Make Dogs Happy?

Many of you might have guessed that I would be listing food as something that makes dogs happy, and while proper nutrition ensures our pets feel their best, food is not an ideal way to make your dog happy.

You see, too many pet parents think that they make their dogs’ days by overfeeding them kibble, overindulging them with treats, and overdoing the table scraps. While your dog(s) may be delighted in the moment, these practices lead to weight gain, obesity, chronic illness, and joint pain as dogs age.

Especially if your dog lives a sedentary lifestyle, like most of the dogs in Chicago, it’s best to use food as a basic care staple (and treats as an infrequent reward) but find other ways to make and keep your dog happy, for the sake of their health and longevity.

Exercise: The Joy of Movement

One of the quickest ways to see pure happiness in a dog is during a dog walk or hike. Walking your dog isn’t just about bladder breaks; it’s about exploring the world, breathing fresh air, stretching their muscles, and interacting with nature and their environment.

Regular walks or runs give dogs both physical exertion and mental fulfillment from all the sights, sounds, and smells around them. Whether it’s a brisk morning jog or a slow sniffari through the neighborhood, honoring your dog’s pace and preference is key to keeping his or her tail wagging.

At Floofins & Co., our team does our best to let dogs lead us in the direction that they seem inspired to go. We keep them safe by avoiding distractions while on walks and observing their body language for signs of fatigue, fear, and other potential issues. Our goal is to ensure dogs’ safety so they can enjoy the experience to the fullest.

Biologically-Appropriate Play: Tapping Into Instincts

Dogs are born with strong instincts. From chasing and tugging to digging and herding, the right play sessions allow dogs to express natural instincts and behaviors in healthy ways.

Fetch, for example, can satisfy both chasing and retrieving drives, while tug games engage jaw strength and promote bonding. Similarly, puzzle toys can satisfy the urge to hunt and forage for prey and food. Encouraging dogs to participate in biologically appropriate play prevents frustration and creates outlets for energy, which often leads to calmer, happier companions once the play winds down.

Enrichment: A World Beyond Walks

Enrichment is a happiness booster that goes beyond a dog’s natural instincts and takes them a bit further into problem-solving. For enrichment, think lick mats, snuffle mats, scent trails, food puzzles, obstacle courses, and novel experiences that engage a dog’s mind.

Enrichment activities fight boredom, build confidence, and mimic the problem-solving challenges dogs’ ancestors faced in the wild. At Floofins & Co., we recommend enrichment because a curious, mentally stimulated pup radiates contentment long after the activity ends. And, successfully completing a puzzle or solving a problem boosts dogs’ confidence, which makes them a more well-rounded, happier dog inside and outside the home.

Training: Confidence Through Communication

Training isn’t only about teaching cues like “sit” and “stay.” It’s about building a language of trust between humans and dogs. Positive reinforcement training makes dogs feel safe and capable, while also strengthening the bond we share with them. Using treats, you can motivate your dog(s) to do what you want them to do a lot easier than teaching them what not to do

A dog who knows what’s expected and can communicate clearly with their person is a dog who feels secure, and security is the root of true happiness, especially for dogs that are closely connected to their wild side and instincts.

Affection: Care With Consent

Of course, love is at the heart of a dog’s happiness but not all affection is created equal. Just like humans, dogs have boundaries. Some love hugs, while others prefer gentle pets or quiet companionship at your side.

Paying attention to their body language including wagging tails, relaxed ears, and the classic “lean in,” for example, ensures that they welcome affection on their terms and in a way that makes them feel at ease. At Floofins & Co., we believe affection paired with consent respects the whole dog, both body and spirit.

What Makes Dogs Happy?

When we weave exercise, instinct-appropriate play, enrichment, training, and consent-based affection together, we paint a full picture of dog happiness. Every wag, stretch, and cuddle is part of a bigger story of care. This National Dog Week, let’s honor the dogs who brighten our lives by committing to what truly makes them happy. After all, we’re happiest when we see them happy!
