Chicago summers are famous for their unpredictable swings, but recent years have brought consistently higher temperatures with higher humidity. For dog guardians, this combination can be a recipe for disaster. Heat stroke in dogs is a life-threatening emergency that can sneak up on us, especially in a city like Chicago where extreme temperatures aren’t the norm and we may let our guard down. Let’s break down heat stroke in dogs in Chicago and how to keep your floofins safe this summer. Please be mindful of these tips as we take on the holiday weekend!

Why Dogs Are at Risk in Hot, Humid Weather

Dogs cool themselves primarily by panting, which evaporates moisture from their tongues and respiratory tracts. When humidity is high, the air is already saturated with moisture, making evaporation and cooling much less effective. This means that even on days when the temperature isn’t sky-high, the heat index (the combination of heat and humidity) can put dogs at serious risk.

Chicago summers can be described as follows:

  • Humidity levels are typically around 70%
  • Humidity ranges from moderate to quite muggy
  • Humidity levels can increase during periods of hot, stagnant weather, making it feel warmer than the actual temperature
  • Average relative humidity is approximately 72%, which can be described as humid but cool
  • According to the Illinois State Climatologist’s office, the average monthly relative humidity in Chicago in July is 69%

How Heat Stroke in Dogs Sneaks Up in Chicago

In cities like Chicago, where residents and their pets aren’t as acclimated to extreme heat, heat stroke can happen quickly. A sudden spike in temperature, combined with muggy conditions, can overwhelm a dog’s cooling system in minutes. Many dog parents may not realize the danger because they associate heat stroke with desert-like, sunny conditions, not the sticky humidity typical of a Chicago summer.

Signs of Heat Stroke in Dogs

Early recognition is critical in responding to heat stroke in dogs. Watch for:

  • Excessive panting and rapid breathing
  • Lethargy
  • Bright red gums or tongue
  • Sticky saliva
  • Disorientation or staggering
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Muscle tremors or collapse
  • Lethargy, unresponsiveness, or a blank stare

Responding to Heat Stroke in Dogs

If you notice any of these signs, immediately move your dog to a cooler area, offer small amounts of water, and wet their paws and underbelly slowly. Avoid soaking your dog too quickly, never use very cold or icy water, and seek veterinary attention right away. Even if your dog seems to recover, organ damage can occur. For this reason, even suspected heat stroke requires a vet visit!

Heat Stroke Prevention Tips for Chicago Dog Lovers

At Floofins & Co., we believe prevention is always the best approach. For this reason, our team observes the following best practices:

  • Avoid peak heat: Walk dogs early in the morning or late in the evening, when temperatures and humidity are lower
  • Keep walks short: On hot, humid days, limit outdoor time to quick bathroom breaks and, instead, play indoors
  • Avoid rigorous exercise and play: Especially during midday, these activities can overstimulate your dog’s body and lead to reduced ability to self-cool
  • Seek shaded routes: Both to prevent heat stroke and paw pad injuries, find a shaded, grassy route
  • Provide water: Always have fresh water available and encourage your dog to drink
  • Never leave dogs in cars: Temperatures inside a car can skyrocket in only a few minutes, even with windows cracked
  • Know your dog’s risk: Older dogs, those with thick coats, short snouts, or underlying health conditions are at even higher risk
  • Watch the heat index: If the combined temperature and humidity feels oppressive to you, it’s even worse for your dog
