The Importance of Exercise & Play in Cats

Cats often get a reputation for being aloof or disinterested. They’re natural-born solitary hunters with a surprising amount of energy. Just because they spend most of their day lounging doesn’t mean they don’t need exercise. Regular playtime is essential for your cat’s physical and mental health. Today, we’re discussing the importance of exercise and play in cats and how we at Floofins & Co. can help.

Why is Playtime Important?

  • Physical Health: Regular exercise helps cats maintain a healthy weight, improve muscle tone, and promote flexibility. It can also help prevent obesity-related health problems such as diabetes and joint issues. According to this article by the Metropolitan Veterinary Center in Chicago, approximately half of America’s cats are overweight. The article states that about 40 percent of cats aren’t just overweight; they are obese.
  • Mental Stimulation: Playtime provides mental stimulation, helping to prevent boredom and behavioral problems. Engaging in interactive play helps keep your cat’s mind sharp and can reduce anxiety. Boredom in cats may cause overgrooming, excessive licking, chewing on the skin, or fur pulling.
  • Bonding: Playing with your cat is a fantastic way to strengthen your bond. It creates positive associations and helps your cat feel loved and secure.

How Much Playtime Does My Cat Need?

The amount of playtime your cat needs will vary depending on their age, breed, and energy level. However, most domestic cats benefit from at least 15-20 minutes of interactive play per day.

Exotic cat breeds like Servals will need a lot more exercise and enrichment. We do not recommend these cats unless you have a lot of experience with them and time to keep them active and engaged.

Playtime Ideas

  • Interactive Toys: There are countless interactive toys available for purchase these days. From laser pointers and feather wands to motorized mice and puzzle feeders, interactive toys engage your cat’s hunting instincts and provide mental stimulation.
  • Robotic Toys: Robotic mice and similar toys are a great way for your cat to play independently. The only catch is that you need to charge these toys regularly like you would any other electronic device.
  • Hide-and-Seek: Cats love to play hide-and-seek. Hide a favorite toy or treat and let your cat search for it. Freeze-dried cat treats like Bear’s Bites’ freeze-dried chicken cat treats are a favorite with active and lazy kitties alike!
  • Climbing and Jumping: Provide opportunities for your cat to climb and jump. Cat trees, shelves, and scratching posts can be great options. If you want to take it even further, check out Catherapy’s awesome cat superhighways and wall shelf ideas.
  • Outdoor Play: If it’s safe to do so, supervised outdoor playtime can be a fantastic way to exercise your cat. However, always ensure your cat is securely contained to prevent accidents. Harnesses and leashes work great with adventurous cats. We love KittyCatGo‘s tutorials on how to harness train and safely get your cat outdoors. Take this test to see if your cat is ready for adventure!
  • Trick Training: Tricks aren’t just for dogs (or kids!) Trick training is a great way to blend your cat’s biological need to hunt with their desire to earn rewards. When teaching your cat or kitten a trick, you simultaneously engage their mind and body. We love Cat School‘s tricks for novice and expert trick kitties.

Tips for Playtime Success

  • Observe Your Cat: Pay attention to your cat’s body language during playtime. If they seem tired or stressed, it’s time to take a break. If they seem disinterested, try a different kind of toy or trick.
  • Vary the Play: Switch up toys and play styles to keep your cat engaged. Toy rotation is a great way to keep old toys fresh!
  • Make It Fun: Keep playtime exciting and rewarding by offering praise and treats. End play when your cat seems to have had enough and never force your cat into a game. Rather, entice them with treats and stop once they are no longer motivated by the rewards.
